About us

On October 25, 1970, the St. Paul Baptist Church was founded and organized by Rev. Dr. Spencer Coleman (deceased, February 1999).  St. Paul Baptist Church was the first Black church in the Del Ray and Alexandria areas in Alexandria, Virginia.

A Call was sent out to 50 sister churches requesting a meeting to establish the church as a full and regular Baptist Church with all rights and privileges.  On June 12, 1971, the Pastor, Officers and Members of the St. Paul Church Mission met in Cora Kelly Elementary School in Alexandria, Virginia to establish the church.   Several Pastors were present, including Rev. Arthur Preston, Rev. Henry Houston, Rev. Gregory Trueheart and Rev. Houston Brooks.  With a unanimous vote, St. Paul was established as a full and regular Baptist Church.  Sis. Mary Anderson (deceased) joined St. Paul at that time and was Mother of the Church.

St. Paul moved from Cora Kelly School in Alexandria after a flood in December 1972 to 2018 Mt. Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, Virginia.  From 1973 through 1976, the Church experienced numerous incidents of vandalism and disturbances during the church services, but the church continued to have services and go forward.  There were people who did not want a Black church located in the Del Ray area of Alexandria.  The Church moved to 112 E. Oxford and Mt. Vernon Avenues in the Del Ray area of Alexandria in 1987.

Upon the retirement of Rev. Coleman, Rev. Robert J. Campbell, a Son of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Alexandria, Virginia began his pastoral assignment at St. Paul Baptist Church in March 1991.  Rev. Campbell was elected as the Pastor of St. Paul and installed in May 1991.  Pastor Campbell served faithfully until his home going in February 2007.

In July 2007, God’s precious grace was again extended to the St. Paul Family, when He sent the vigorous and visionary Rev. Dr. F. Nelson Roach to pastor His people.  We believe he was sent to St. Paul for such a time.  Pastor Roach demonstrated a heart and spirit to serve God and lead this branch of Zion to new and remarkable heights.  In August 2007, St. Paul’s Officers and Members voted and elected Rev. Roach as the third Pastor of St. Paul Baptist Church.  Within 30 days the church moved its location to:  3425 S 9th Street, Arlington, Virginia.  Pastor Roach served faithfully until his home going in 2008.

The Church was still standing on the promises of the Lord and still receiving God’s grace and guidance.  For several months in 2009, Rev. Robert M. Yancey, Sr., Associate Minister of Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Alexandria, Virginia served as Supply Pastor of St. Paul.  Rev. Yancey was very faithful in his work, knowledgeable and kind in his deeds in carrying out God’s mission.  In May 2009, St. Paul’s Officers and Members voted unanimously and elected Rev. Yancey as the fourth Pastor of St. Paul Baptist Church.  Rev. Yancey was installed as Pastor of St. Paul Baptist Church in September 2009.  We thank God for Rev. Yancey, and we look forward to his continued leadership.

Under the leadership of Rev. Yancey two Ministers were licensed.  Minister Irone Bailey (January 2013) and Minister Harold Lee (February 2014).

During the Covid Pandemic (2020 – 2022) St. Paul held services virtually and voted to relinquish our lease of the Arlington location.  Under the leadership of Rev. Yancey the congregation stayed faithful and prayerful that God would bless us with a building that we could call our home.  In January 2023 the leadership of St. Paul voted to move to our present location: 13111 Telegraph Road, Woodbridge, Va.
